JOSEF POLÁŠEK
1899-1946
Josef Polášek, a disciple of Pavel Janák and an early co-worker of Bohuslav Fuchs at the
Brno Municipality, is among the most significant avant-garde architects in Brno and Czecho-
slovakia. A native of impoverished Moravian Slovakia, Polášek focused in his work on
selected types of structures with a social purpose or mission. School buildings and urban
residential settlements for the poor built to his design rank alongside the best of Czech, and
even European interwar architecture. This monograph is the first to present Polášek's
complete work solely in the original photographs and designs, a large part of them being
published for the very first time. It also contains an eloquent summary of Polášek's texts written
for publication, thus bringing a new and complete picture of this exceptional character in Czech
interwar architecture.
