GENERATION 1901-1910
FIRST GRADUATES FROM THE CZECH SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE IN BRNO
1925-1940

In the 1920's modern architecture was introduced in Brno by a group of architects born in the
first decade of the nineteenth century. An Exhibition of Contemporary Culture took place on the
premises of the brand-new trade fair centre in Pisárky in Brno in the summer 1928 and
demonstrated the victory of modern architecture. At about the same time, a group of modern
architects born largely in Brno in the first decade of the twentieth century started to practise.
The group's profile, significance and dimension were formed and extended during the 1930's.
One of the causes for this was the foundation of the Czech school of architecture in Brno in
1919. The book focuses on the group of architects from this generation whose common
characteristic is the graduation from Technical university in Brno, specialization Architecture
and Civil engineering. Architects Josef Kranz, Miroslav Putna, Bedřich Rozehnal, Mojmír
Kyselka, Eduard Žáček, Evžen Škarda, František Kalivoda, František A. Krejčí, Bohumil
Tureček and others have generated a high standard of Brno´s functionalism, and in their best
works they reached an undisputable peak of the Czech art of the construction between the two
world wars. This publication deals with the most significant creators and works of this
generation.
